The Littoral Realm

The littoral zone exists at the place where the ocean meets the land. Shaped by continual tidal motion and the energy of the waves, when the water recedes a dynamic landscape emerges. Filled with a unique range of flora and fauna that have adapted to survive within the constantly varying range of environmental conditions, this is the place where humans interact the most with the ocean through leisure and industry.

Nutrient loading, the spreading of invasive species, acidification and fluctuations in the water level caused by climate change can have a detrimental effect on the myriad of organisms that have evolved to thrive within this landscape.

This project is ongoing and born from a fondness for walking alongside the ocean. This collection of images were taken exploring the Scottish coastline through a lens since relocating here in 2019.
